Tuesday’s Lament

Was just a Tuesday, she takes the bus to town
Two stops to ride, pressing faces all around
There’s one seat empty but she wants to stand
She knows old Wilson and his wondering hands

Perfect the traffic lights run green
Time for coffee and a magazine
Picks out a scrapbook for little Jean, who cuts out pictures of her favourite team
It changes day to day, no disappointment that way

Window frames the hour
Quotas change margins get narrower
So she waits tables noon til four
Three days a week sometimes a little more
Serving lunch to the tourist trade
She saves her tips for a rainy day

Five to four, finishing up sweeping the floor
Grabs her coat and waves her goodbyes
Kicks up her heels to catch the four o five
Gets a call from little Jean, “I’ll meet you from the bus,
Oh by the way mum did you get me a little something?
I’ve been a good girl”
