about

From the eighteenth century this has to be Dartmoor’s most famous tale. Kitty Jay, an orphan girl, spent her early years in the Newton Abbot workhouse. In her teens she was apprenticed to a farm near Manaton and it wasn’t long before she starting receiving the attentions of the farmer’s son. Tragically for Kitty Jay she fell pregnant. Marriage was out of the question and so shunned from the farm, full of shame and nowhere to go she took her own life. It was against local custom at that time for anyone who committed suicide to be buried on consecrated ground so she was buried at a crossroads outside the village. Even today you can still visit what is locally known as Jay’s Grave where fresh flowers are laid but by whom nobody knows.

lyrics

One Track Line
Do you know my name; it’s been changed three times since those days
Had no roots to lay, work took me from town
There’s a one track line
Stealing all my time
There’s a one track line
And it’s leading me on

Sweetest days I knew, I think he felt them too.
Taste warm skin and skies and such promising lies

There’s a one track line
Stealing all my time
There’s a one track line
And it’s leading me on

We could be lovers
Alone in the dark
He’ll bring me flowers
Lost in the dark, in the dark

Do you know my shame, sixteen weeks and five days since we lay
With my awkward frame, there were less choices then

There’s a one track line
Stealing all my time
There’s a one track line
And it’s leading me on
Leading me on
Leading me on
Leading me on
Leading me on, on, on, on
