about
John Lethbridge was born in Newton Abbot in 1675. As a young man he worked as a wool merchant but later fell on hard times. With a large family to support (reputedly seven children) he needed a new income. His solution was to invent a diving machine. After adaptation of an old cider barrel and experimentation in his purpose built garden pond Lethbridge achieved his goal in 1715. Many had been made before but his invention enabled the use of air within the barrel, returning to the surface to replenish during half an hour periods. For the next thirty years Lethbridge triumphed and became a very wealthy man. His most famous recovery being from the Dutch vessel Slotter Hooge which sunk off the Madeira coast with over three tons of silver on board. He became one of the most successful salvage men of his time.
For determined dreamers everywhere.
lyrics
Diving
I can’t believe that it was you who told me
Find the fever come alive
I can’t believe that it was you who taught me
Only the strong survive
Doubters on the shoreline, I won’t see them
Take a breath now it’s one, two, three, dive in
Dive In
Now they’re talking in the streets and houses
About the man who lost his way
They took his job so couldn’t feed his children
But rose a phoenix from the flames
Doubters on the shoreline, I won’t see them
Take a breath now it’s one, two, three, dive in
Dive in, dive in, dive in
Don’t think just dive in
Down the tools, burn the plans, make the tea, I’ll make a stand
And wash the taste of stale opinions from my mouth of those who say
I can’t see it any other way
The time is right; to dive in, dive in
“Necessity is the parent of invention “
That’s what Johnny said
Immerse yourself and find a new dimension
Turn your world upon its head
Doubters on the shoreline, I won’t see them
Take a breath now it’s one, two, three, dive in
Dive in, dive in, dive in
Don’t think just dive in
