The son of a brewery clerk, Frank Matcham, was born in 1854 in Newton Abbot.
In 1868 he was apprenticed to a local builder and architect. By the mid 1870’s he had moved to London and joined Jethro Robinson’s revered architectural practice. In 1877 he married Robinson’s daughter Effie. Just a year later his father-in-law died leaving Frank to run the practice aged only 24.
Frank Matcham went on to become the leading Victorian theatre architect, responsible for more than two hundred theatres in Britain including the London Palladium, the London Hippodrome, Blackpool’s Grand Theatre and Tower Ballroom and Buxton Opera House, he was also responsible for the County Arcade in Leeds.
